WHAT IS
GAIN STAGING?
Gain staging is setting the level at each point in your signal chain so every plugin and channel receives an optimal input — not too hot, not too quiet. Proper gain staging keeps analog-modeled plugins in their sweet spot, prevents cumulative clipping, and gives you consistent headroom from the first insert to the master bus.
Why gain staging changes your sound
Analog-modeled plugins — compressors, saturators, console emulations — are calibrated to react at specific input levels, usually around -18 dBFS RMS (equivalent to 0 VU on hardware). Feed them too hot and they over-saturate and clamp; feed them too quiet and they barely engage. Gain staging keeps each one in the range it was designed for.
It also stops problems from compounding. If every channel runs 6 dB too hot, that stacks up on the bus and you're fighting clipping you created yourself. Set levels conservatively at the source, use trim/utility plugins to correct between stages, and your mix bus stays clean with headroom to spare for mastering.
