WHAT IS
SATURATION?
Saturation adds subtle harmonic distortion that emulates analog gear — tape, tubes, transformers, consoles. It makes sounds feel warmer, denser, and louder without raising the peak level, because it adds harmonics rather than gain. Used gently across a mix or master, it's the difference between a clean-but-sterile record and one with analog character and glue.
Why saturation makes digital feel analog
Digital audio is clean to a fault — accurate, but sometimes lifeless. Saturation reintroduces the harmonic richness that real analog gear adds naturally. Those extra harmonics do two things: they make a sound feel louder and fuller at the same peak level, and they add a cohesion — 'glue' — that makes separate elements feel like one record.
In mastering it's a finishing move — a touch of tube or tape saturation to add warmth and density without obvious distortion.
