Mixing · aka audio mixing, mixdown

WHAT IS
MIXING?

Mixing is the stage of production where the individual tracks in a song — drums, bass, vocals, synths — are balanced into one cohesive stereo recording. Using level, EQ, compression, panning, and effects, the mix engineer makes every element sit in its own space so the song sounds clear, punchy, and intentional.

What mixing involves

A mix engineer sets the balance (how loud each element is), carves frequencies so instruments don't fight (EQ), controls dynamics (compression), places sounds in the stereo field (panning), and adds space and depth (reverb, delay). Done right, you stop noticing individual tracks and just hear a song.

Mixing is where a collection of recorded parts becomes a record. It happens after tracking and before mastering — you can't master your way out of a bad mix, so this stage carries most of the sonic weight.

Quick answers

MIXING FAQ.

What does mixing a song mean?

Balancing all the individual recorded tracks — drums, bass, vocals, and more — into one cohesive stereo recording, using level, EQ, compression, panning, and effects so every element sits clearly in its own space.

Does mixing come before or after mastering?

Before. Mixing balances the elements within the song; mastering polishes the finished mix as a whole. You mix first, then master.
