WHAT IS
MULTIBAND COMPRESSION?
Multiband compression splits the signal into frequency bands (for example lows, mids, highs) and compresses each independently. It lets you tame a boomy low end or harsh highs without pumping the whole mix, making it a precise tool for mastering and for controlling problem frequencies that a full-band compressor would over-react to.
Where multiband earns its place
A full-band compressor reacts to the loudest thing in the whole signal — usually the kick and bass — so it ducks your entire track every time the low end hits. Multiband solves that by giving each frequency range its own compressor. You can control the lows without the highs ever knowing.
In mastering, the most common use is gentle control of an inconsistent low end — a band around 60-120 Hz smoothing out bass notes that jump in level. Used sparingly, it's surgical. Used heavily, it flattens the tonal balance, so a little goes a long way.
